Beihai park 北海公园, the imperial gardenLocated in the center of Beijing, Beihai Park is one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved actient imperial gardens in China with a history of about 1000 years. The construction of Beihai Park started 938(in the first year of the reign of Emperor Huitong) in the Liao Dynasty. The park as we see it today is the result of Emperor Qianlong (Qing Dynasty). The park covers 69 hectares of which 39 in water. In the south side of the lake is Qionghua islet (Jade islet) with the White Pagoda. The White Pagoda towers high above the island and lake and has therefore become the Beihai landmark. |

In the park there is a variety of temples, screens and other buildings, completed by a lot of flowers and trees The White Pagoda (Bai Ta) on Qoinghua isletOn the islet Qionghua (Jade islet) in the lake you find the White Pagoda. The islet is man-made an houses some caves. These caves originate from the 12th century. The pagoda was erected in the year 1651 under the reign of Emperor Shun Zhi in the Qing Dynasty |
