The great wall of China (长城), aka Chinese WallThe Great Wall of China, called "Long Wall" by the Chinese and "Chinese Wall" by foreigners, is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick,
but also other matrials such as rammed earth and wood. The wall as we can see it today has been
constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and extended the older existing parts of a wall.
The oldest parts of this defense structure have been date to the 7th century BC. Several kings and emporors have
changed, extended and enhance the wall to fortity the wall and protect the changing borders. |
Badaling (八达岭)Badaling is probably the most visited part of the Great Wall by many tourists, Chinese and foreign. This part of the wall was built during the Ming Dynasty around the year 1505. The highest point is 1015 m above sealevel. The length of this section is approximately 80 km. It is located north-east of Beijing. Mutianyu (慕田峪)To the north-east of Beijing you will find the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. The Mutianyu section is older than the Badaling section of the Great Wall. Construction of the present wall began, building over the previous wall, during the early years of the Ming Dynasty. In 1404, a pass was built in the wall. In 1569, the Mutianyu section was rebuilt and till today most parts of it are well preserved. |
