Nanjing (南京), capital of Jiangsu province (江苏省)Nanjing is a city with a long history and home and capital to several dynasties for many kingdoms, starting 2500 years ago. Today it is a modern, lively city with much of its rich history preserved, although not always as visible. Nanjing, which means "capital of the south", finds it origin south of Xuanwu lake (玄武湖). The old city of Nanjing is surrounded by a wall of approximately 35km in length. The city has grown since and also settled at the north side of the Yangzhe river. The old city now supports a modern shopping centre around Xinjiekou and a business centre around Gulou, where you can also find the tallest building of Nanjing (zifengtasha - 紫峰大厦), reaching 450m into the sky. Today Nanjing has a population of approximately 8 million people (2014) |
