Sultan Ahmed Camii (The Blue Mosque)The Sultan Ahmed Camii, also known as the Blue Mosque was built by Sultan Ahmed I from the year 1606 though the year 1616. It was his intend to build a mosque more beautil and sophisticated than the neighbooring Aya Sofya. Critics say he did not succeeed. The Sultan Ahmed Camii holds the unusual number of six minarets, which led to some controversy as the mosque in Mecca (the most important mosque) also had six minarets. This was solved by the Sultan through the addition of another minaret to the mosque in Mecca. |
